During the final lap of the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix, held in extreme weather conditions, Nigel Mansell touched the wall, damaging the gearbox of his Lotus. His car came to a stop just a few meters from the finish line. Exhausted, Mansell tried to push the car across but collapsed on the asphalt, overcome by the physical effort and the oppressive heat. The image of Mansell lying unconscious became one of the defining symbols of the extreme physical demands faced by Formula 1 drivers in that era.
